FAQ: The Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

Is the licensing on this all legal?

As you might guess from the heavy promotion this is getting on Jim Butcher’s official website — yes!

We’ve licensed the Dresden Files IP from Jim Butcher (and have previously published tabletop RPGs based on the Dresden Files).

And we licensed reuse of the Dresden Files novel series cover art from artist Christian McGrath.

It’s all in the clear. Rest easy and back with a clear conscience!

Can I increase my pledge now to cover the later shipping charge, instead of waiting for BackerKit?

Please don’t. None of our stretch goals are calculated with shipping dollars factored in, so if you end up adding shipping dollars to your pledge now, you’ll produce “false progress” towards that goal, causing it to be underfunded. A more detailed description is found in the shipping section of the campaign page of this project.

Will adding expansions to my main game shipment increase my shipping?

No. Shipping rate doesn’t change for Domestic shipments regardless of what goes in the box, but International rate won’t change either due to the low weight of the expansions relative to the weight of the main game itself. This is stated explicitly in the Triple Play/Menage reward tiers.

Can I make one pledge that ships to multiple locations?

No. We can’t support splitting shipping for a pledge. One pledge, one destination.

I'm in for the $10 digital reward package. Will I need to increase my pledge to get digital previews of the expansions?

No. But, the art for the expansions is weeks or in some cases months away from being done, so it’ll be a while before we can roll out digital files for the expansions to our $10 & up backers.

Can you add a deck for [insert favorite character here]?

Within the scope of this Kickstarter, no. Adding new character decks is a careful, long-term process usually, requiring extensive play-testing. We need to make sure we serve the game well first, and that can put limitations on which characters we support. We’d love to do more decks in future expansions, though; making this game a success in the wider game market after the KS is over is our best path for making that happen.

Could you offer a "component upgrade" stretch goal that upgrades all the components in the game to plastic ones?

We really feel the 2mm boardgame quality chipboard tokens are gonna be the right way to go for the sustainability of the game. We ran a few scenarios on plastic or acrylic game components during the price quoting phase and it consistently looked as though we’d have to add $5-$10 to the MSRP for the product to go that route. We strongly feel that $40 MSRP is the correct, sustainable pricepoint on this game, so we’re sticking with our choice here.

I have an idea for an additional shippable reward (such as a packet of upgraded tokens, a dice tower, etc). Can you make it?

It’s tricky. Right now our licensing covers the base game and the expansions we’ve offered as stretch goals. Additional shippable items are additional products, and we’d need to make sure that doesn’t mess with the license. On top of that, there’s also manufacturing costs for the items, and if they’re items that would be supplied from our game manufacturer, we’d need to do full product research & development on them appropriate to something with a minimum manufacture count of 5000 units. Which is to say, we probably love your idea, but actually making it happen is… tricky at best.

How do I add [add-on X] to my pledge?

Here’s how you add something to your pledge:

You can add an expansion to your pledge simply by increasing your pledge amount by $10 (assuming you’re already pledging to get the main game). Other add-ons can be added to your pledge by increasing your pledge amount by the listed value for that add-on.

  • Go to the front page of this project and click on Manage (blue button in green box).
  • On the next screen, click the blue Change Your Pledge button.
  • On the next screen, increase the amount in the “Pledge Amount” box by [amount you wish to add to cover the cost of an add-on].
  • Click Continue.
  • Confirm your changes with the Confirm button and you’re good to go!

You’ll be asked to pick what that’s for at a later time, in BackerKit.

Shipping costs will be billed separately in BackerKit. In the USA, your shipping cost won’t increase no matter how much stuff you order.

For INTERNATIONAL shipments, add-on items which are not lightweight (the expansions and Fate Dice items count as lightweight, everything else doesn’t with few exceptions) will increase your shipping cost by $10 per additional item.

Can the game fit sleeved cards? Can the game fit the expansions?

There’s a lot of extra room in the box, both for the expansions we’ve funded here and future as-yet unplanned ones. This should give ample room for both the current stuff you’ll be getting, as well as options for storing the cards sleeved (may require some angling or nonstandard orientations for them, but they should fit).

Why is the fulfillment ETA so far away? Is it being manufactured in China? Will Chinese New Year delay fulfillment like most other projects whose eta falls just after Chinese New Year?

This project’s first two goals was extending the art budget, which also extended the execution timeframe. We could’ve sent a (less art-ed) version to the printer in late May, but to give time for the art we must bump that out to late October. We anticipated this already and set our fulfillment dates based on the October art-ready deadline. It is indeed being manufactured in China, which involves the literal slow boat and complications from CNY, which is why we’re giving November, December, January, February, and March to get the games to us and start shipping. If there’s any slip past that, we expect it’ll be at most a month.

Why are you charging full MSRP?

There are a lot of reasons, but the most important ones are about protecting the lifeblood of the game industry, the brick & mortar specialty game store—and through protecting that, protecting the viability of this product we’re kickstarting for the long haul. We have a strong, positive relationship with our retailers; offering discounts here would undercut them and compete with them when we’d rather cooperate with them. We like our retailers happy, and happy retailers like us. When they like us they’re more likely to carry our games. So, we’re not going to jeopardize that, especially with a game launch as important as DFCO! Which also goes to sustainability; aggressive discounting strategies tend to lead to weaker products, production delays, and companies operating on shaky financial footing overall. We have no intention of being the source of any of those sorts of problems.

What does "exclusive" mean on this Kickstarter?

For the purpose of this KS, you can take “exclusive” to mean that you’ll be getting those items for free, complementarily, one set for each copy of the core game backed, and that your period of access to them will be exclusive for some significant period of time (several months at least, possibly a year).

That said we do reserve the right to turn portions of them into a paid product available on our webstore at some point, tho when that might be, if ever, is anyone’s guess. Mouse is such a fan favorite it feels cruel to stick him in the kennel forever. :)

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
